What parents say
My daughter couldn’t wait for Literature Class day with Carol’s Heroic U. She loved it. She had been an avid reader for many years, but was limited in the types of books she was willing to engulf. During this class, she was challenged to read outside her comfort zone genre. The point system kept her motivated to not only do the required work, but to do extra credit work. Carol’s positive energy in working with the students was always apparent. She was able to identify the strengths of each student, and valued and recognized the unique contributions that each individual student brought to the classes.

Carol is one of those people who possess the unique ability to open a young person's mind to the wonder of learning. Her passion and creativity have a way of infecting all who are lucky enough to be in the classroom with her. I believe that we all, child and adult alike, could use a steady dose of Carol. She is what learning is all about!

My son really benefited from the two-year cycle. We're so glad he stuck with it. Woodcock Johnson testing showed that his ability to read and analyze, choose a summary sentence, and comprehend were way up from last year and I think this class was a key part of that growth.

Carol’s classes got my daughter to enter the Wake County Poetry contest, and she actually won! She was also introduced to National Novel Writing Month, which got her going on writing novels as a pastime. This year was her second year in Heroic University and her second year doing NaNoWriMo. She managed not only to reach her goal, but to finish her first novel and publish it! I love that Carol’s class has gotten my daughter to read good books she would not have normally picked up, and given her the opportunity to discuss these books with others.

My child has taken two years of these classes and is now well versed in the Hero’s Journey and the Twelve Archetypes. I highly recommend these classes and love Carol’s unique and innovative teaching style. It’s a fun format and the kids work really hard and read many diverse and interesting books. They have great discussion topics during class. A nice variety of activities and a balance of different learning styles are incorporated. Each child can also personalize their monthly analysis and experience by stretching themselves to practice new skills or by finding a creative way of incorporating special talents into their assignments. The final presentations are always impressive!

I loved the whole concept of Heroic Literature. Looking through great literature, analyzing, comparing and contrasting the stories and their characters through archetypes. Both of my sons love to read, but usually stay within the same genre. Carol got them reading books that they never would have chosen. They had flexibility in how they chose to analyze their readings. Most of all, they enjoyed the group discussions because everyone was so engaged in the material. Carol does an awesome job with the literature and I loved that she included poetry.

My son, Jacob, always loved to read but was never much of a writer. He had these great ideas in his head but had trouble getting them onto paper. The Double A Archetypes class really got Jacob past just reading a story to thinking and talking about the characters in the book. During this course, Jacob entered NaNoWriMo and poetry contests which he would never have done before. I loved watching his creativity grow as Carol continued to give the students different challenges throughout this course.

An anonymous online survey of families completing the class, conducted via Survey Monkey, found that both students and parents rated most aspects of the class as an average score of 9 or higher on a 10-point scale.
