Heroic University offers fun, relevant, cutting-edge literature classes for creative and independent-thinking students to uncover the deeper meaning of the stories in their schoolwork and in their lives.

Welcome

Are you looking for literature classes that excite and inspire your students instead of putting them to sleep?

If you are tired of English classes that teach the same outdated books in the same old-fashioned way, give the Heroic University 21st-century approach a try.

Classes at Heroic University are different because:

  • Our focus is drawing out lessons that are relevant to the students’s lives
  • Our reading lists combine the best of the classics with high-quality contemporary novels
  • Every class includes books by diverse and multicultural authors
  • We give students the choice of what they will examine in their analyses instead of making everyone work on the same topic
  • We encourage student creativity by allowing their analysis to be art, music, computer programs, and more in addition to papers
  • The Live Class format is designed for peer cooperation and learning
  • The students, rather than the teacher, are in charge of their points
  • We use state-of-the-art technology that prepares students for what they will be using in college or in the workplace
  • We develop lessons to be interdisciplinary

Our classes are based on the concept of the Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell, who believed that the whole point of great literature was to assist us in living authentic and fulfilling lives. At Heroic University, we don’t just check off reading a bunch of “great books” because it looks good to colleges. In our classes, we dive deeply into a wide variety of novels to develop our abilities in reading, analysis, and expression while discovering universal truths useful to the adventures of our own lives.

Now there are two types of classes at Heroic University

LIVE DISCUSSION CLASSES FOCUSED ON LITERARY ANALYSIS

Intended primarily for homeschool students, these September-April classes are designed so students spend most of their time working at home independently or on the class website, then come together two to three times a month for live discussion classes. Classes have additional material on literary analysis using poetry or short non-fiction.  Intended as academic studies for students, the classes focus on literary analysis while containing an important component of how these stories relate to students’ lives in the real world.

NEW!  ADULT DISCUSSION CLASSES FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

For years, adults have said they wanted to take Heroic U classes as well.  So here it is!  Heroic University is now offering some short-term classes for adult interests.  These classes generally reference Campbell’s work, but are more geared towards applying to students’ lives than on story analysis (although some involve both).

CLASSES FOR 2023-24

5th-9th Grade

The Tri-L Challenge (Literature, Language Arts, and Life)

This class provides an introduction to Joseph Campbell’s theory of the Hero’s Journey as a tool for both literary analysis and facing our own life challenges. Students will learn to use the stages in the Hero’s Journey to better understand the plot and characters of a mixture of classic and contemporary novels. Other traditional literary devices will also be covered, particularly through analyzing 1-3 poems per month. Students are expected to read a minimum of one book per month and to present to the class an analysis of that book, but the analysis can be in the format of their choosing (traditional essay, movie or animation, artwork, music composition or rap, creative writing or drama, Minecraft model, etc.)

Starting September in Cary on Thursday mornings.  Click here for more information.  Click here to register.
