My name is Carol Cross, and I’m Founder and Headmaster of Heroic University.
I’ve been working in education for over 30 years. For the past 20 years, my focus has been teaching homeschoolers. I homeschooled my son from birth through his graduation from high school, and now he is thriving as an honors student at college.
I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of William and Mary, majoring in philosophy and minoring in government, and earned a Masters in Education from George Washington University. I worked professionally in education for over 10 years before the birth of my son. My professional work was in curriculum development, educational program management, and technology-based distant or online learning. I used all those skills—and more—during my homeschooling years, including developing Heroic University. I started Heroic U to give my own son and his homeschooling peers what I think is a more progressive approach to literature studies than is available in most conventional schools.
Now that my son is no longer homeschooling, I choose to continue to teach classes in literature.
I teach because to teach is to assist today’s students to discover who they are and to develop their gifts and ultimately to make a better tomorrow. I teach literature because I think that life is all about our stories, and so understanding stories and knowing how to create our own best stories is a means to our best lives.
I also teach because I love it, because is teaching is part of who I am. I appreciate parents who allow me to contribute to their children’s development; as a mother, I believe there is no greater honor. Through my classes, I do my best to assist your students in learning and growing and becoming their best selves.
