This week was the Banned Book Week campaign run by the American Library Association. Each year the ALA publicizes efforts to remove controversial books from school and public libraries to educate the public for the need to allow access to diverse literature in our institutions.
Here is the list of the most frequently challenged books in 2019:
In 2019, the most frequent complaint about the most challenged books was for sexual content, particularly LGBTQIA+ perspectives or characters. That has been a trend in the past decade. Most of the most-challenged books for the past several years were LGBTQUIA+ oriented books. The only other book last year in the top ten was the Harry Potter series, which continues to be challenged for its use of magic and witchcraft.
